12:28 pm - call ins

rebooten_tag
this community seems a little old but hopefully someone will answer me asap.  i am looking for an answer before sunday.

I asked for the day off, and didn't get it off so i called in.  my manager told me this was a progressive call in, and that it never leaves your record etc etc.

how many of these does it take to get fired from meijer?  is it 6 or 7 like normal call ins?  I've only ever done this once.

6:57 am - Hours

super_grl123
I find it funny of all extra hours your supposed to be allotted to do this and that ,,,, and you never see them? Stupid ABL scheduling was a joke. Meijer is turning into little terrorist group that likes to resort to flipping scare tactics instead of being a place that treats all the same with respect.
P.S they need to hammer down and the lazy butt heads who do nothing but walk around and waste time crusty old broads need to get..., and if someone has not taken a phone away from this idiot in fashion and shoved it some where soon I will be amazed. Jerk is a good for nothing dork. If you knew him ,, you would have no doubt in agreeing with me, lying back stabbing lazy, whiner waste of air and space JERK.
Okay rant ended for the time being.

10:32 am - Double Paging...

justamazing
Ok, at my store as of the past 2 years people have been double paging lately...why? "Team member from hardware dial 3 0 9, team member from hardware dial 3 0 9" It gets quite annoying really. When I page, I give a little 2-5 second pause...yes I know that doing that is annoying, but it grabs attention leaving a "dead air" space in there.Read more )

Hello fellow team members. Around our break rooms/time clocks we have fliers up regarding our upcoming company picnic. It says to RSVP at meijer.com/mjrCorpEvents. Alas, the site isn't working (it's giving me an error message). Anyone know the site we're supposed to use to RSVP?

5:26 pm - Computer Write-Ups and Corporate Scheduling

aerosmash
My store just rolled out team member at-a-glance, where the computer automatically documents late breaks and tardiness. Now everyone is scared that they'll get fired for something stupid. At the moment, people are afraid to call in and a good number of people think that if you call in at all (even if you're not a repeat offender), you'll automatically get written up for it. My favorite part of the whole thing was the individual meetings with your team leader prior to the roll-out. I was actually told by my team leader that "Meijer is not out to fire anyone." I wanted to start laughing. Isn't this precisely the whole point of the system? Especially since they can fire you after three write-ups, it seems to me that having the system do what team leaders wouldn't always do will lead to more terminations. The years of being treated like crap by management didn't result in any of their top-rate high seniority team members quitting, so the company had to move on to more drastic measures.

Our corporate scheduling will be rolling out in a month or two. I can't wait for that one. I know that store directors and lines leaders will be able to alter the schedule, but I can see vacations amd requests for days off getting denied right and left. That will lead to people calling in more often, leading to further discipline and terminations. If Meijer keeps going at this rate, pretty soon they'll have no team members left because everyone will get fed up and quit.

I know other stores already have these programs rolled out. I was wondering if how they are working/not working for everyone and if there are a lot of problems. I also have a question about it. I was told that you had to take "break, lunch, break," in that particular order by my team leader. However, other people at my store have told me that they've been told it doesn't matter what order you take them in, just as long as everything gets taken. Thanks in advance!

7:49 am - Further reading on the contract.

kianir
I snagged a copy of 951's proposed contract from some high mucky-muck who was at our store today. There are a couple of things that aren't mentioned in the summary: one, important, is the inclusion of an entire new section regarding layoffs and recalls.

For people under one year of seniority, layoffs are permanent. With more than one year, you have up to 12 months to be recalled and keep seniority. Normally I'd say this is a good thing, to have a policy in case the worst happens. But I don't think that's the spirit in which the section was written. If you combine it with the mega-department scheduling, that adds up to an easy breezy way to hire and fire GM workers and seasonal cashiers.

The only bones that we were thrown were 700 hour raises and a somewhat improved grievance procedure (itself only needed because the company's been acting in increasingly poor faith.)

The rep I talked to explained to me that once Meijer makes a final offer, the contract has to go to a vote, whether or not the union got what it wanted. Fine, I thought -- but if we didn't get what we wanted, why is our union plastering the bulletin boards and sending out mailers encouraging us with "unanimous support" to vote yes on this mediocre contract? One of these two guys was an executive VP and one was some other equal or nearly-so, and they realized when standing talking to me that our wage schedule had us under minimum wage for several months. Oops!

That's leadership. And that's why I'm voting no.

11:43 pm - To all you 951 kids.

kianir
Anyone have any opinions about the upcoming contract?

I'm probably going to vote no on principle, but it looks like it is, at least, a return to the considerably less shitty contract in place shortly before I hired on. In real terms though, retail clerks start at $7.15, which is 20 cents above minimum in Michigan, up from $6.00, which was (at the time) 85 cents above minimum. Is this just an adjustment to be slightly less shamed by the fact that many of us got a raise from the state before we got raises from our employer?

11:27 pm - Fred Meyer

beatlesjill79

Recently, i was reading another LJ,

[info]digne and learned that there was another Fred Meyer Store.. This one is based on the west coast mainly, and is owned by Kroger.

The stores are almost the same, check out their website. And a bit of their history. Check out the pictures of the store.
Fred Meyer is a public company.

For some reason, i'm baffled by this.
Strange but true.

2:28 pm - More on the Management Changes...

aerosmash
I got some more details from my TL today on the management shuffle. They are having a meeting about everything tomorrow (it must be chainwide, since someone else mentioned a meeting). Starting Thursday, the managers will all have interviews with the store director, who will decide their fate. I'm having deja vu here. This reminds me a tad too much of the layoffs of a few years back, but not as extreme. I also made an interesting observation. Remember how that round of layoffs occured right before they installed the self-bagging checkouts? These are coming on the horizon of the installation of the large-order self-checkouts. Most of the changes at the store level are going to be made to the pricing, promotions, and inventory team, along with systems. Systems will be cutting back on hours and people again, getting 64 hours for the week. The IA's will not have to set ad anymore. This will be the responsibility of the pricing team. Gotta love Meijer logic. If it ain't broke, we must fix it. I'll post more info if I hear anything interesting.

comment_hor I just found out our store is going to get those LARGE self-checkout lanes, the ones for entire basketsful of stuff, instead of express orders. If people can't figure out how to use the REGULAR fast lanes, how are they supposed to use the LARGE fast lanes??

7:10 pm - Heard Something Interesting...

aerosmash
I don't know if other stores are still cutting hours or not, but mine is. I'm full-time and haven't worked a 40 hour week since December. I average 36 hours a week lately, the lowest they can cut me without jeopardizing my full-time status. Anyway, a co-worker of mine spoke to the head union rep for our region (East Detroit) today and heard something interesting. He was asking if there was anything we could do to get back to 40 hour, because we each have several part-time people below us in seniority that we could claim hours from. There are also other departments taking hours from us and giving them to their people who do nothing to help our department. Anyway, the head rep said that the company is trying to eliminate as many full-time positions as possible to save on health insurance costs. They are doing this by attempting to make things hell for full-time employees so they'll get frustrated and quit (which I've suspected for years but never had confirmed), or cut hours for full-timers below 32 hours long enough that they'll have to be re-classified as part-time.

The union at my store has essentially been useless over the years.
The fact that we have a contract means nothing to management. They do as they please and get away with it. I've known several people who tried to file grievances at the store level over various things, and nothing comes of it. If they try to file one, paperwork never gets taken care of, or it's conveniently put set aside and forgotten about. It seems to me that the union is in place to serve the company and managers, not employees. The whole thing is just frustrating to me, because they really can't justify cutting hours based on sales being low. Business is starting to pick back up, as it always does this time of year, and keeps going for the rest of the year through December. Based on the typical number of shoppers in the store, I can't see the justification for cutting hours. But then again, nothing Meijer does has ever made sense to me.
